The presidents of Central America met to lay the foundations for peace and end the war conflict. This first meeting is known as esquipulas I.
On August 6 and 7, 1987, in Esquipulas, Guatemala, the presidents of Central American countries met, approving the document entitled "procedures to stablish a firm and lasting peace in Central America".

Esquipulas II was an agreement of the 5 countries in which it said: we are going to end the war, we are going to stop fighting military, we are going to stop using territories, support for irregular groups is going to stop. we are all going to respect each other and we are going to live together based on the fact thet we have a common denominator, and that is that we all are democracy.

In San Jose Costa Rica, on January 15 and 16, 1988, they met once more to evaluate the progress of the agreements signed in Esquipulas.
Nicaragua in order to move forward with the peace process, adopted measures that would contribute to negotiations between the government and the Nicaraguan Resistence.

In march 1988, the international court of justice established that Nicaragua should be compensated by the United States for the damages caused between 1980 and march 1988.
